Over the last few months, I've sworn that I'll collect the entirety of the Dune series and Gene Wolfe's solar cycle. Clearly, as a Sci-Fi fan, I'm a natural lover of all things Dune. It is practically made for introverted weirdos such as myself. Gene Wolfe, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated and In the best way. I've become infatuated with his ideas and all the wonderfully rule-breaking works he left in this world. So, not only will I collect them, I'll read those suckers too! Oh, and I'm also after his Solider of the Mist series. Yes, I'm a madman. I'm cackling, but it's not like I can express that through anything more then a series of nonsensical characters ('hahaha!' 'kakaka!' 'bwhaha!' etc...). I'm aware that Wolfe's works are wildly complex and dense, but that is really not going to hurt me in any way. I'm the one who actually read Homer's Odyssey and Dante's Divine Comedy, all for fun. Oh, did I mention as well that I was SO much of a Lovecraft fan that I visited his grave, went to John Hay, and visited what was left of his aunts house? I'm the worst in the best way, I love me. Anyhow, I have purchased most of the original Dune trilogies but I've come across this issue where companies selling used books don't seem to understand what 'good' or 'like new' means. It seems that, to them (the ominous 'them' in which I won't specifically mention because they were kind enough to refund me and let me keep the shoddy copies), it only means the inner text is 'good' or 'like new'. But, what I'm looking for is a decent dust jacket and generally a spine that isn't destroyed as well. In their defense, I'm finding that due to the age of books now - its nigh impossible with copies of my favorite books from the 1960s to be intact in the desirable way I want. If I want that, I need that old plastic dust jacket protection to be there. So, in some ways I'm compromising in general by having what is essentially library tampering protecting the cover. Ah! So, is it safe to say that perhaps the library plastic covers for dust jackets may be the safest route in these trying times? Or, at the very least, if you want to be able to actually read those fantastic stories without them disintegrating in your hands. Anyhow, I'll be posting more about this come the next couple of days. More mail is expected and I have some book adventures planned for November! -L. BROOKS

Essentially, Forever Phantasy is back!
Sorry. For reasons far out of my control, including those of the vastly life altering variety, Forever Phantasy had become buried beneath the rubble of my crumbling life. Now, I'm bringing it back and I've got some plans! Like: book hauls, plenty of reviews, more reviews, and a whole lot of thoughts and speculation on books and literature In general. As well, I'm writing my own book. So, I'll be sure to complain about that process plenty. Oh, did I mention there will be more reviews? -L. BROOKS |
